Five Myths About the Synagogue Choir
Myth 1: need to read Hebrew. Wrong. The Hebrew is transliterated on all of the music.
Myth 2: I need to make a commitment to come to shul every
Friday night and Saturday morning.
Wrong. Most of us find
such a commitment difficult and we are all welcomed for what we can do.
Myth 3: There is a lot of rehearsing involved. Wrong.
While regular rehearsals would be desirable, this last year we only
rehearsed for The High Holy Day services.
Myth 4: It takes a long time to learn the music and where it
comes in the service. Wrong. Many
of us have learned ‘on the job ‘as It were, by coming up to The
choir loft and participating, when you can gradually learn the melodies,
the lyrics and The place of The music in the services.
Myth 5: You have to be a Callas or a Pavarotti. Wrong.
What you need is enthusiasm and an enjoyment of music.
What you will gain is an increased appreciation of the
services, improved Hebrew, a sense of contributing to the congregation
and friendship.
