Adult Education

Rabbi Elizabeth Tikvah Sarah provides a wide-range of adult learning opportunities:

Exploring Judaism

This annual learning programme is held on Shabbat from 1-2.30pm, after kiddush, and is open to those who choose to attend the whole course, those who wish to explore particular themes, as well as those who’d like to come along on an ad hoc basis.

Organised into four units: 1: AUTUMN FESTIVALS; 2: JEWISH TEACHINGS; 3: DOING JUDAISM; 4: FROM LIFE TO DEATH , the curriculum draws on Jewish texts (e.g. Torah, Bible, Mishnah, Talmud, Siddur [weekly and Sabbath prayer book] & Machzor[festival prayer book]) and includes an exploration of the differences between Liberal Judaism and other Jewish denominations. The programme also includes the festivals and commemorative days as they come up during the course of the year

The Beit Midrash Shabbat Morning Service

On the second Shabbat of the month, the congregation become students, participating in a Beit Midrash – ‘House of Study’ – as the Torah reading section of the service expands (and the other parts of the service reduce) to allow for extended exploration of the parashah – the Torah portion of the week.

Access to Hebrew Class

This session, held weekly, every Thursday from 11am to 12.30pm, is open to all levels, from total beginners, to those studying Biblical Hebrew Grammar. Students work alone and in chavruta – ‘pairs’ – with one-to-one tutoring support from the rabbi.

Access to Hebrew Workshop

Like the weekly morning class, this monthly evening session held on the third Thursday of the month from 7.30-9.00pm, is open to all levels, from total beginners, to those studying Biblical Hebrew Grammar, with students working alone and in chavruta – ‘pairs’, with one-to-one tutoring support from the rabbi. In addition, each workshop includes a ‘taught’ component focussing on aspects of Hebrew grammar, for those interested in developing their understanding of Biblical Hebrew (during which time others work on their own).

The Monthly Evening Shiur

Held on the second Thursday evening of the month, from 7.30p-9.00pm, this is a text-based class, focussing on the study of texts from the Torah, Tanach (Bible), Mishnah (first code of Rabbinic Law), G’mara (commentary on the Mishnah), & Midrash (collections of rabbinic commentary). Each session involves study of a particular piece of text, both as class, and in chavruta – ‘pairs’ – and includes making sense of key Hebrew words.

The Book Club

In addition to these programmes, synagogue member and writer, Claudia Gould, convenes a BOOK CLUB on the first and third Shabbat mornings of the month, from 10-10.45am prior to the service.
