Or, to be more precise: SHABBAT JEW.L.L.S. - A Shabbat Jewish Life-long Learning School. As we are aware, each synagogue is simultaneously a 'House of Assembly' (Beit Kenesset), a 'House of Prayer' (Beit Tefillah) and a 'House of Study' (Beit Midrash) for people of all ages. And we also know that while our synagogue is open every day, Shabbat is the sacred day of the week when we congregate together as a community. As of 5th. January 2002, we will be harnessing all these elements by launching SHABBAT JEW.L.L.S. - a Shabbat Jewish Life-long Learning School. Taking place each week on Shabbat morning, with the 11 am. service at its heart, SHABBAT JEW.L.L.S. will not only be the new forum for the Religion School, but will also be a framework for regular Adult Learning, as well. This is what the morning will look like:
As far as my involvement is concerned, I will lead the 10am. Adult Learning Programme each Shabbat, and the Kabbalat Torah Programme on alternate Shabbatot (at 11.15am). I will continue to lead the Shabbat morning service on a fortnightly basis, involving the Kabbalat Torah class in parts of the service, and giving my sermon prior to the reading of the Torah - when the congregation will be joined by the children. The first Shabbat of the month will continue to be a 'Family Service', led by the children, from February onwards. While the young people will be following a year-long programme on the theme of 'Our Synagogue', the Adult Learning Programme will include practical 'How to' sessions aimed at enabling people to engage actively in Jewish life, and text-based study of various themes and issues. Parents have already received copies of the Religion School Programme. Suggestions for the Adult Learning Programme (which will begin one week later on January 12th.) should be sent in to the office by December 3rd. - so that the schedule of sessions may be printed in the January issue of the newsletter.
